Welcome to another episode of Foo- Get Fed!! For our very first episode, we travelled far and wide to... Johor Bahru! We went to certain establishments recommended by our crew and already well known and loved by the locals as well as Singaporeans.

Read on to see if it's worth the trip there!

Kam Long Ah Zai Curry Fish Head

In Ben’s very own words, this place is “damnnn cheap”. They offer portion sizes from small(RM31) to large(RM60) There is also an option to top up tau kee at RM7, which we recommend as it goes really well with the curry.

The first dish we tried was not their curry fish head BUT their curry fish tail(RM67) as we wanted more meat for the crew. Their curry is on the lighter and watery side, which makes it drinkable like a soup. The fish was fresh and it was filled with a plethora of ingredients such as ladyfingers, cabbage, tau kee, long bean.

Overall, while this may not be the beeest curry fish head/tail you will have, it is still a good curry fish head/tail and will definitely be the most value for money one.(if you can find more value one in SG, @ us !!!!)

Address: Kam Long Ah Zai Curry Fish Head, 74, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Opening Hours: 8am - 4pm (Only Friday until 2pm)

Nimmies Pastry Cafe

Well known for their pastries, we ordered their special croissant and tarts as well as many drinks~~ Jumping on the salted egg trend, we tried their signature Chili Salted Egg Crab Croissant (RM18). Unfortunately the thick layer of cheese on top overpowered any salted egg/chilli flavour. The other savoury croissant was the Hoe Lemak Croissant (RM16) which shooked us. The sambal was legit and it complemented the pastry surprisingly well.

Moving on to their sweet pastries , we had their Pistachio Supreme Croissant(RM18). The pistachio flavour was prominent and the pastry was very flaky, they were also generous with their filling, which oozed out. The sweet croissants were a nice change of pace from the savoury ones. Out of the wide variety of drinks they offer, we had 7 of them(diabetes time), but only the Virgin Mojito mocktail (RM17) stood out to us as it was very refreshing. The rest of the food was your average cafe standard.

The interior of the cafe was really aesthetic, giving a really great ambience. With both indoor and outdoor seating offered, it's perfect for taking pictures for the gram or just a chill session with friends.

Address: Nimmies Pastry Cafe, 171, Jln Beringin, Taman Melodies, 80250 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Opening Hours: 8am - 11pm Daily

Restaurant Teck Sing (Zi Char)

Last but not least, Restaurant Teck Sing which is very popular among both locals and Singaporeans. The family oriented restaurant has newspaper and magazine extracts plastered on their walls giving it a really old school vibe.

The Paper Baked Chicken(RM35) was extremely tender and juicy. It also had a good balance of flavours as the herbal flavour wasn't too strong. One downside is that they use kampong chicken making it smaller than your standard chicken. However, the star of the show for us was their Drunken Prawn Claypot(RM30) as the broth was really refreshing and addictive.

Besides that, the other dishes we tried were the Sizzling Beancurd(RM12) and Sambal Kang Kong(RM13). You simply can't go wrong with these staples.

Address: Restaurant Teck Sing, 3&5, Jalan Sutera 1, Taman Sentosa, 80150 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Opening Hours: 11am-9pm (last order at 8:30pm)

Conclusion

If you're heading down to JB soon, you will most probably get these places pop up in your recommendations as they are already well known by Singaporeans. While the food is definitely affordable and decent, there was nothing amazing that would incline us to travel specifically for it. If you're a local in JB or know some proper Malaysian recommended eateries, DM us on Instagram @getfedsg and we might just head back in!!
