We are back with another episode of re-featuring Food King places, and this time we are introducing one of Ryan’s newest recommendations! He stumbled upon it by sheer coincidence... but more on that later!

Also... there's another giveaway happening on our Instagram @Getfedsg so go and check it out! (hint: if you love beer, this one's for you!)

Union Farm Chee Pow Kai

First up, we have one of Ryan's nostalgic favourites that you can't easily find elsewhere in Singapore! This stall is renowned for its signature dish, and it's so popular that you need to place an order 1-2 days in advance to avoid disappointment (they only make this dish in limited quantities). The dish in question is none other than Chee Pow Kai, also known as paper-wrapped chicken. They used to be located on a farm adjacent to SIM University, where they reared their own chickens for consumption!

The Paper Wrapped Chicken ($24/10pcs) is wrapped in paper, which becomes almost translucent after deep-frying. When served, you can immediately see the juicy chicken inside upon tearing the paper. The aroma of the chicken is released, and the meat itself is tender, moist, and infused with a sweet marinade and herbal notes. The chicken is incredibly addictive, and even with six of us, we easily devoured 40 pieces. The Egg Noodle with Oyster Sauce ($8) may seem unassuming, but it bursts with flavour from the oyster sauce. The noodles have just the right amount of oiliness without being overwhelming. They have a springy texture and a perfect match for the paper-wrapped chicken. They also offer the option of Bee Hoon ($8), and some of us preferred it over the egg noodles, so it ultimately depends on personal preference.

Overall, this unique dish is not commonly found in Singapore. The prices are still reasonably affordable, and it's definitely one of Ryan's favourites. Make a trip down to check it out for yourselves! (Remember to order in advance @ 8282 8806!!)

Joo Siah Bak Kut Teh

Next up, we have one of Ryan's favourite white pepper Bak Kut Teh places, although he has only been there a handful of times as it's quite far. The first thing that catches your eye will undoubtedly be their Premium Loin Ribs ($9), also known as "dragon ribs" in Chinese. They also serve the usual Braised Pork Belly ($6/8), Braised Pork Leg ($6/8), as well as small dishes like preserved vegetables, peanuts, beancurd skin, and dough fritters.

The premium loin ribs are immensely popular and limited in quantity, so it's advisable to go early if you want to try them. Some of the premium loin ribs are more tender than others, but overall, they are enjoyable with a good balance of meat and fatty parts. The soup is robust with hints of pepper and herbs, making it smooth to drink. Their Pork Belly is highly fatty, with a higher fat-to-meat ratio, and cut into thick pieces for a satisfying mouthfeel. The Braised Pork Leg is well-marinated and contains plenty of collagen. The meat is tender yet firm, and the layer of collagen and fat is just right. The small dishes are all standard, but the variety to choose from is appreciated.

Overall, if you plan to visit, go early to try the Premium Loin Ribs, as they tend to sell out in the morning.

88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist

Last but not least, we have Ryan’s newest recommendation! And it's a popular one with the office. So, how did Ryan find it? One of their outlets is actually located near our office, and Ryan ordered grab delivery not expecting much, but their roasts blew us away!  We got our usual Assorted Platter ($10/20/30) and also other items we hadn't tried before such as Plain Noodle ($2), Fried Wanton ($6.50) and Wanton Soup ($5.50).

The star of the show was, unsurprisingly, the Char Siew and Crispy Pork Belly. For their Char Siew, they use the cut of pork belly, which is uncommon in Singapore. This results in a very fatty piece of meat, while not compromising on the meatiness. Together with a perfectly sweet glaze and nice char, it has become Ryan’s all time favourite! The Crispy Pork Belly on the other hand was really crispy and the meat was still tender with juices oozing out with each bite. Unfortunately, while the duck was decent, it pales in comparison to the other 2 roasts.

We also LOVED their “plain” noodles which came with substantial amounts of pork lard and some vegetables (nai bai). Their noodles were coated with a sauce mix which includes soya, oyster sauce and lard oil, giving it loads of flavour. The noodles were also eggy, springy and had a nice bite to them. The crispy wantons and wanton soup (with pork lard!) were definitely above average, but we’d definitely recommend trying their roasted meats and to pair it with their plain noodles!

While the prices are definitely higher as compared to other roast meat stalls, the price is well worth it with such quality food that they serve. If you love your roast meats, you definitely have to try this out!

Conclusion

Despite the tight competition among the 3 locations, Union Farm Chee Pow Kai emerged as our favourite! This is because the paper wrapped chicken they sell is very uncommon in Singapore and they do it so well! A honourable mention to the other 2 locations as they still are both very good stalls and serving what they do best!
