In this episode, we have a VERY special guest with us. He's none other than FRANSTER!! An old friend of Ryan and someone not unfamiliar to good food!

Many may remember him for his Feng Shui tips but for today, he will be recommending a hidden gem to us. Also if you love to eat spicy food, this episode is for you, so read on to see what spicy treats we have for you!

Azme Corner Nasi Lemak

When we first arrived at around 11am, the queue was snaking long and it remained consistently so until they sold out at 1pm. Another thing that had our hopes up was the “pleasant” treatment our producer received when we told him we were here to film as discussed previously. You know what we say, the ruder they are, the better the food is. A the icing on the cake was when some regulars in the queue tried to gatekeeper the place the  they heard we were filming!

They serve several variations of Nasi Lemak with differing ingredients, and we got their Set A($4) , Set B($3.50) +Begedil($0.50) ,Mee Rebus($3.50), Mee Siam($3.50) and Mee Soto($3.50) Set A includes Rice, chicken, fish and egg, while Set B includes rice, chicken, ikan bills and egg.

We all know that the most important component of the nasi lemak is the rice and chilli. We are glad to say that the rice here is fluffy and fragrant, while the chilli is more sweet than spicy. The chicken batter is better than most as it really coats the entire chicken and gives an added crunch to the chicken wing. The fish is also super big and really meaty, and is not all bones like most others, so it’s quite the substantial option. The egg comes in the form of an omelette and covers the entire portion of rice. While the mee rebus and mee siam was ordinary, we liked the complexity of the mee soto soup. With very affordable options as well as generous portions ,we highly recommend this stall!

If you’re making a trip down, we’d advise you to pre-order on their WhatsApp at 9799 5438.

Dunman Road Char Siew Wanton Mee

This stall is run by a friendly elderly couple who were hesitant in letting us feature them. Ryan has featured them at least 3 separate times previously and we are back!

At a very affordable price of $4, you get a very generous price of wanton mee with ingredients such as char siew, wanton, vegetables and most importantly, PORK LARD! And the crispy pork lard here is one of the biggest we’ve seen. Also not forgetting the star of the show, which is their bright orange chilli! The noodles they serve is very springy but does have a subtle alkaline flavour. BUT, that’s why it’s a must to eat it with the chilli, so as to mask the alkaline test. Do beware that this chilli is painfully spicy, but in a good and addictive way! The overall taste of wanton mee is very balanced as there’s different flavours from the spicy chilli, the crispy and fatty pork lard and the blanched greens.

That said, if you know of any wanton mee that doesn’t rely on chilli as its star ingredient, let us know and we will bring Franster there! (he doesn't take spice well...)

林玉梅 Sarawak Laksa & Kolo Mee

A favourite of many of Ryan’s old friends, Ryan would have definitely brought you here if you’re a close friend (sorry Ben).

Run by a pair of sisters helming from Sarawak, they originally sold char kway teow but then changed to kolo mee because of how hot it would get. We tried their Kolo Mee ($4.50), Sarawak Laksa($7), Fried Wanton($3.50) and Fish Stick($3.50). According to Ryan, this kolo mee here is the closest tasting as the one he had in Sarawak! While the ingredients such as the minced meat and char siew is standard, what stands out is their noodle, sauce and chilli. The noodle is very springy, to the point where it’s almost curly! It’s lightly oily making it packed full of flavour. Their sauce base is salty and savoury and is full of flavour with the additions of shallot and pork lard bits in it. Lastly, the star of the chilli which is home made by them. The bright red appearance with the chilli seeds is not for show, the chilli here really packs a punch so prepare your beverages!

Their Crispy Wanton is fried to perfection and super crispy and meaty at the same time. Their Fish Sticks were also crispy on the inside while the meat was chewy on the inside. The Sarawak Laksa was unlike anything we’ve tried and is completely different from the singaporean version. The laksa hits you with a strong herbal taste and a very subtle coconut taste at the back (as you would expect from a typical Singaporean laksa). They come with 2 huge prawns and in a much more substantial portion! If you want a reliable bowl of kolo mee, you definitely have to check this place out!

Conclusion

Considering that we had 2 non-spice eaters, Azme nasi lemak was the favourite among the 3 of them. With affordable pricing, generous portions and ingredients done well, it was no surprise! But Ben did mention, he would have recommended Lin Yu Mei’s kolo mee to others.

With that, we come to the end of another Get Fed episode, we thank Franster for his guest appearance and for his recommendation. Are there any other guests you’d like to see us invite on the show?
