Singapore

This week, we are featuring some of Singapore’s best breakfast spots! These places open early in the morning and sell out reallyyyy quick. As the saying goes, the early bird catches the worm, so we woke up extra early to hunt down these places for you to see if its worth it!

Also... We are hosting another giveaway happening on our Instagram @getfedsg, so go and check it out! (Hint: We are giving away the perfect drink to have alongside your breakfast)

Yong Chun Wan Ton Noodle

The first place on our list, and the one we were most excited for, is Yong Chun Wan Ton Noodle. This stall was recommended to Ryan by one of his friends and remains one of his favourite Wanton Mee places in Singapore. It is so popular that their Wanton Noodles sell out as early as 10am in the morning! It turns out that the well-received recipe was handed down by one of the stall owners’ mothers.

We ordered the Wanton Noodle ($3), Dumpling Soup ($3), and Shredded Chicken Hor Fun ($3). The egg noodles were springy and evenly coated with the savoury-sweet char siew sauce. The char siew is leaner rather than fatty but still was very tender and retained a light smoky flavour. Fun fact: instead of roasting the char siew, the stall uses the ‘Ma Jie’ method to cook the char siew in a wok! We were also pleasantly surprised by the handmade dumplings in the Dumpling Soup. The stall mixes water chestnuts with minced pork, lending the dumplings a delightful crunchy yet juicy texture. As for the Shredded Chicken Hor Fun, the noodles soaked up the sweet and spicy sauce yet retained its al-dente texture.

Dickson Nasi Lemak

Next up, we have a regular Singaporean breakfast staple - Nasi Lemak! Dickson Nasi Lemak gained popularity in early 2022 when it first opened, as it claimed to use a recipe from Malaysia that was rated the best Nasi Lemak by three of Malaysia’s prime ministers. We ordered the Ayam Goreng Berempah Chicken Leg Nasi Lemak ($9.20), Ayam Goreng Berempah Boneless Chicken Thigh Nasi Lemak ($4.90), and Sambal Sotong Nasi Lemak ($8).

The trademark of good Nasi Lemak is the rice, and Dickson Nasi Lemak did not disappoint. The rice was soft and fluffy, and had a good amount of coconut taste that was not too overwhelming. Apparently, they only use milk from young coconuts! As for the chicken leg, it was crispy on the outside, yet remained tender and juicy inside. Similar to the chicken leg, the pieces of boneless chicken thigh were very tender and marinated perfectly. The 18-ingredient sambal was sweet, spicy, and extremely flavourful, and paired perfectly with the rice and chicken. However, although the sotong pieces were soft and not tough at all, the Sambal Sotong Nasi Lemak did not stand out compared to the chicken Nasi Lemak variants.

Petit Pain

Last but not least, we have Petit Pain Bakery, which we stumbled upon by accident. Located just across the road from Dickson Nasi Lemak, we were stunned when we saw a long queue forming outside Petit Pain even before it opened at 11am. Our curiosity got the best of us and we found ourselves joining the queue. We ordered the Classic Croissant ($3.20) and Pain au Chocolat ($3.80).

At first bite, we could tell that the outside layers of the Classic Croissant were baked to a crisp. On the inside, a honeycomb pattern was visible, the trademark of a good croissant. The layers were also flaky and paper-thin, and the croissant had a light buttery taste to it. Similar to the croissant, the Pain Au Chocolat was flaky and light. We expected there to be more chocolate inside, but as the chocolate was rich and clearly of high quality, the pastry to chocolate ratio was perfectly balanced. Overall, one of the best french pastries you can expect to find in Singapore! If you intend to make a visit, head down early as they bake their pastries in small batches and sell out quickly.

Conclusion

Although we presented three very different types of breakfast places, Yong Chun Wan Ton Noodle emerged as our favourite! Although Wanton Mee is a common dish that can be found in all corners of Singapore, Yong Chun Wan Ton Noodle does it so well that we would indeed travel down early in the morning just for it!
