Geylang Serai, Singapore

The Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar is back, and it's back with their longest and largest installation ever! Despite not all 700 available stores being filled, there is still plenty to be explored! From food to boutiques and arcade games, there is something for everyone.

There is a wide variety of food: From your usual pasar malam food such as the Ramly burger or Indian Vadais, there are also younger, more hipster food like Praffes(don't ask) and corn dogs. Here is what we tried!

Perghh

They are known for their Signature Corn Dog with Cheese ($8) but do sell other carnival foods like truffle fries and mars bars. They also have a subsidiary drink store, Satu Liter selling various types of drinks ($5-6) such as their milk, mocktail and premium series.

Many people actually recommended this store to Ryan, specifically their corn dog. The corn dog was huge and came with lots of cheese, before being topped off with chilli and mayonnaise. The batter was fairly thick but so was the sausage. It definitely feeds 2, so you can consider this as a sharing dish with your friends!

House of Lobster

What catches your eye is the numerous celebrity approvals at the front of their store .Their slogan is “delicious delight with every bite”, and this couldn't be more true for their Signature Lobster Roll ($16). A slit is cut in their buttery toasted bread and it's filled generously with lobster chunks. It is to the point where there is a noticeable bulge in the bread roll. (one that’s invited). It comes with a lemon wedge and a side of corn chips + nacho cheese.

Praffles

This is my first time seeing and hearing anything like it. It's literally a prata in the shape of a waffle. (Pra-ta, Wa-ffles… Praffles, get it?)  The batter looks like any typical waffle but biting into it, you can see the layering of your typical prata. We had their Rendang beef ($15.90) and garlic prawn ($14.90) flavours. It comes in a cone so it's perfect for eating on the go.

They were one of the more popular stores as there seemed to be a constant queue for it.

Rainbow Works

Next to Praffles is their sister company, Rainbow Works! Like their name, they are offering cute and fun foods to the masses. They have a coconut milkshake, Cocolupa ($11.90) served in a really unique basket. It is filled with goodies like nata de coco, corn and roti kok( which was really cunchy and complemented well). Not only did it look aesthetically pleasing it was really refreshing, perfect for cooling us in the sweltering heat. They also have a cute Japan Banana ($6.90) which is soft and sweet. Their fillings include: Original (banana puree), Chocolate nutella and cheese.

Alley

Selling their usual Poffertje and drinks, this time they have an addition of beef cubes with the choice of Pink sea salt and black pepper($12) or Mozzarella cheese($14). They come in sizable portions and are good for sharing. What stood out to us in particular was their Sunrise Bucket Dirty Soda ($5.50) which is a combination of soda, strawberry peach and coconut. It was refreshing and had this yakult taste to it which we really liked

Yum Cha Sg

Known for their HoneyComb Ice Cream($8), they add no artificial sweetener and come with real honeycomb. Within the large cup there are layers of ice cream and cornflakes, as well as chewy pearls at the top which really add texture to the whole ice cream. With this sweet treat, we ended our food adventure

Lastly, here are some tips from our experience that will benefit you!

1. Remember to bring wet wipes and tissues.

These guys really come in handy with the amount of finger food there is and the amount of sweat you will produce, which brings me to my next point.

2. Bring a portable fan

If you are visiting in the afternoon, it can get pretty hot and humid, despite it being sheltered. If you can, bring a portable fan to keep yourself cool.

3. Be prepared to stand

Despite the seemingly adequate amount of seating from rooftop seating to the long walkways of tables, there is not enough seating when it gets really crowded. We went on a Thursday evening and for some reason the mezzanine seating was all out of bounds, restricting the seating even more. Alternatively, you can always just share the table with another group, which seemed to be a common occurrence.

Conclusion

There are an overwhelming number of stores in the Geylang serai bazaar and one trip there is simply not enough to finish exploring the food alone. In order to try more food while keeping the cost affordable, we’d recommend you to grab some friends and share the dishes. Do also try to go before peak hours so as to avoid the crowd.

Let us know if we have missed any of your favourite stalls @getfedsg and we might be just head back to try them! Most importantly, to our muslim friends and viewers, have a blessed Ramadan!
