We’ve been getting an overwhelming number of requests for this episode: RE-FEATURING F*** KING PLACES. As such we travelled all across Singapore to try Ryan’s top recommendations and at the same time test if their standards are still up to par.

Read on to find out if it's as good as Ryan claims!

Hainan Fried Hokkien Mee

This is Ryan’s all time FAVOURITE hokkien mee which triumphs all others!! (according to Ryan) It's tucked away in Golden Mile Food Center and you can easily identify it by the cute uncle cooking in his goggles. Between the 2 types of hokkien mee (dry and wet), the hokkien mee sold here is the dry version which Ryan LOVES. Something unique about this place is that they serve both chilli padi and sambal, which gives the dish a nice kick.

The yellow noodles and bee hoon are packed with flavour as they soak up the crustacean broth during the frying process. The usual ingredients of sotong, prawn and pork belly are also included. Our only gripe however, would be the lack of pork lard. Despite that, Hainan Hokkien Mee is definitely a top 3 for most of us in the office and remains Ryan’s all time favourite!

Address: 505 Beach Rd, #B1-34 Golden Mile Food Center, Singapore 199583
Opening Hours: 1000-1700 (Closed on Wednesdays)

Heng Huat Fried Kway Tiao

Heng Huat sells a rendition of char kway tiao you won't commonly see anywhere else. They serve a “healthier” version of this sinful dish by adding a sizable amount of blanched chye sim atop the noodles. The noodles itself has a subtle wok hei and comes with a generous amount of cockles and bits of chai poh (preserved radish), giving it a burst of flavour.

The crunchy and juicy chye sim not only neutralises the oiliness of the Char Kway Tiao but also adds crunchiness to the soft noodles. We can see why this was Ryan's daily go-to back when he lived in the area.

Address: 121 Pasir Panjang Rd, #01-36, Singapore 118543
Opening Hours: 1100-2000 (Wed-Sat)

Classic Cakes

FUN FACT! This was one of the first few features on Food King and close friends of Ryan would know to get him the radish cake here for his birthday. The cake is made from a traditional family recipe which includes lup cheong (chinese sausage), dried shrimp and is jam-packed with umami.

It is garnished with generous portions of spring onions, fried shallots and some sliced chilli. The soft and fluffy radish combined with their citrus-y chilli sauce is really a match made in heaven. Before we knew it, we had totally wiped out the radish cake (literally ATE and left no crumbs.) Moreover, Ryan has been eating at this place since he was 18, and the standards have been consistent since.

Beach Road Prawn Noodle House

DID YOU KNOW? Ryan specially arranges grab delivery even though the delivery fee LITERALLY costs more than the prawn noodle.... IF that isn't a testament to how good it is, i don't know what else will convince you.

Ryan’s go-to order is Prawn with Pork Ribs Mee ($9.50/$13.50) and it's a must to get their dry version! The star of the show is definitely their pork ribs and prawn soup. The pork is fall-of-the bone tender and has fatty parts which makes it even more indulging. On the other hand, the soup, despite being packed with the essence of the prawn flavour, is light and not jelat at all. No wonder Ryan can easily down 3-4 bowls of this soup. This bowl of prawn noodle was worth every cent and did I mention you can get free refills of their decadent soup!?

Address: 370/372 East Coast Rd, Singapore 428981
Opening Hours: 0700-1600 (Closed on Tuesdays)

Conclusion

AND that wraps up this episode of re-featuring Food King places. It was truly nostalgic seeing the old sticker hung at their stores, but there's a NEW sticker in town. If you’d like us to continue visiting Ryan’s old haunts, just let us know @getfedsg and we’ll be sure to pay them a visit!
